Screenshotting in Windows

This is pretty basic knowledge, but for your information: Pressing Alt-PrintScreen places an image of the frontmost window on the clipboard. Pressing PrintScreen by itself places an image of the entire desktop on the clipboard.

If you should take video screencaps, you probably would need some extra software. Many multimediaplayers got their own solution, like with VLC media player, which can play a great choice of formats without pre-installing codecs. E.g. DVD, SVCD, Divx / Xvid, Mov, etc. And it's free.
If you want to capture video, like from a game, you could download and try Fraps, which is not a freeware application, but shareware, and it has certain limitations. Although it's fully possible to use it without buying it.
